Marn Spanner knows nothing of his first few childhood years beyond a few snippets of dangling, ethereal memories; a steamship adrift in the Void, some passengers and crew jumping screaming off of the ship, watching Glowmadness slowly affect others and then rescue by a missionary team of the Artificer.
In a highly unusual move, Marn was adopted by his rescuer, Thravin Spanner and his wife, Marconda, and raised in the ways of a Steampriest. At 14, he was provisionally accepted as a page to the Mechanic and Steamfitter’s Union because he showed an uncanny mechanical ability which many attributed to the supernatural association his ‘father’ had with the Artificer and perhaps innate inclination for the workings of cogs and gears.
Adolescence was a troubling time for Marn and he struggled to fit into a society that viewed him as not only a second class citizen but as an interloper. As often as possible he would venture to as many of The Islands as he can and has seen Landfall and narrowly escaped a confrontation with a roaming band of the The Sons of Spire.
Recently, he has been left practically penniless and without a sponsor at Deepsky Citadel after the murder of his father by an Orc he knows only as “Ortag”. He has tried to slip back into the Citadel to ask his adopted mother to help him claim his material birthright but he was rebuffed in his efforts by a Drakin dockmaster who was worried about the penalties he would face if he were caught.
